La Serena is Chile's second oldest city with beautiful white sandy beaches and a pleasant year-round climate, pure air, great scenery and superb seafood. Pedro de Valivia founded Santiago in 1541, and thereafter went on to order the founding of La Serena in 1543-44 as the sea link between Santiago and Lima. It was fortified against pirates in the 1700’s and enjoyed an economic boom in the 1920's.

Day 04: Mar 18             Arica, Chile      7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

In bygone eras Arica was Bolivia’s access to the sea for exporting silver from their mines in Potsi.  As a result of the War of the Pacific, Arica became Chilean territory.  It is still Bolivia’s main access to the sea via railroad, but is also developing seaside.

Once part of Bolivia, and Bolivia's access to the sea for silver exporting, Arica became Chilean territory in the War of the Pacific.  Arica is connected to Bolivia by train and still functions as its access to the sea.   Arica is now a developing seaside resort, with golden sand dunes, miles of seashore, duty-free shopping and lively nightlife. Arica is also the gateway to inland ruins of ancient cultures, Lauca National Park, with the astonishing Chungara Lake, one of the most elevated of the world, located at the foot of the Payackata twin volcanoes.

Day 05: Mar 19             At Sea

Your second day at sea - relax and enjoy the warm sun and take in several of the ships’ available activities.   The award winning experience gets even better on-board Celebrity Infinity.  Through a new partnership with famed Las Vegas restaurateur, Elizabeth Blau, the dining is even more delicious and with the wine enrichment program, their Riedel Crystal adds the ambiance.

Day 06: Mar 20             Lima, (Callao) Peru      7:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Lima, the cultural and economic heart of Peru, once served as the seat of power for the Spanish Empire in South America.  The catacombs beneath the Church of San Francisco are a sight to behold, as are the thousands of antique texts you’ll find in the adjoining monastery.

Day 07: Mar 21             At Sea

The sun feels soooo good and the sky is soooo clear - you may want to do nothing but enjoy the wonderful amenities of this amazing cruise ship.  Today might be a good day to visit the art gallery, shop in the boutiques, or stretch your legs on the outdoor jogging/walking track.

Day 08: Mar 22             Manta, Ecuador            8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The equator passes through Ecuador and is the smallest of the Andean countries in South America. Manta has a diverse geography and spectacular countryside and is about the same size as the state of Nevada. While in Manta, you might want to visit the archaeological museum and travel to the nearby village of Montecristi where you get a chance to see Panama hats being made. Although many people believe that the first Panama hats were actually made in Panama, they were not. They were first marketed in Panama, but manufactured in South America. Montecristi remains one of the best places to buy a woven hat or other goods made of wicker. Even if you are not interested in hats, a trip to Montecristi is worthwhile. The village is only about 15 minutes inland from Manta and still retains its colonial look.

Day 09: Mar 23             At Sea

This is a great day to let your world slow down...thinking about the cold winter you left behind.  With Celebrity you're just moments away from Las Vegas and Broadway style productions.  Enjoy the glamour, talent, and technical wizardry each night in their state of the art theatre.

Day 10: Mar 24 Daylight Transit of the Panama Canal    6AM – 4:00 PM

This is what you have been waiting for...the “Canal”!  The Panama Canal represents a heroic triumph of human ingenuity over nature.  Although built a century ago, it offers up-to-date movement through the six monstrous locks as you travel from one ocean to the other.  You will be inspired by the Herculean effort that was required to make this seemingly impossible dream of linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans a reality.

Day 11: Mar 25 Cartagena, Colombia                10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

This modern and bustling city, seaport, and commercial center still boasts much of its original Spanish colonial architecture. Explore the beautiful and historic Old Town of Cartagena. The fortress walls, quaint, narrow streets and balconied houses are all vivid reminders of the former colonialists. The city's numerous monasteries, plazas and noble mansions are significant links to this region's grand past.

Day 12: Mar 26             At Sea

Remember that good book you tucked in the bottom of your suitcase…today’s the day to sit on the sun deck or around the pool in the beautiful mild sunshine of the tropics and dig into it.  You’re only a couple of days from the coooold days back home – enjoy the sun while it lasts!
